The rules of jewellery are simple. Wear silver or gold depending on your skin undertone, take one thing off before you walk out the door, and classic is always more timeless than bold. At Anna Rosholt Jewellery, we’re not so into the rules. Below are four jewellery rules we’re constantly breaking with examples from our team that make it make sense.
Rule 1: Wear silver or gold depending on your skin undertones ❌
Jewellery is forever. We can’t control what our eye is drawn to or what special pieces are passed down to us. Not wearing your grandmother’s ring or a pair of earrings that light your soul on fire because they’re the wrong colour metal is ludicrous. Your jewellery should celebrate your style and the things you enjoy. You might like to wear gold one day and silver the next. Or, you might like to play it up with mixed metals (we’ll talk about those when we get to rule 3).
Example: Kiara has a cool undertone which would traditionally mean she should only wear silver jewellery. But look how fabulous she looks in the Mama Ingwe Earrings in gold!
Rule 2: Less is more ❌
We’ve all heard the Coco Chanel quote: “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.”
But we’re a shopping destination for maximalist queens. And, even for our minimalist clients, a good bit of layering goes a long way in creating one-of-a-kind jewellery looks that say something about you. Layer your necklaces, stack your rings, pop an extra charm on your hoops, and embrace the more is more fun mentality.
Example: We love the way the Boa Necklace and Paper Chain Necklace (with a Peridot Juicy Gem!) look layered together in this photo.
Rule 3: Never mix metals ❌
But how else will we wear our most-loved pieces together?! It’s true that you don’t have to wear every piece you own with every look. But some of us are so attached to certain pieces that taking them off is a crime. This often results in people with gold wedding jewellery thinking they can only play with gold earrings and necklaces for years to come.
We love the bright surprise of luxurious metals clashing in the same look. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But you know your style and you know what looks good on you — this is your hint to push past your comfort zone!
Example: We clashed a gold and silver ring stack to create this bold but balanced look. We love how the different textures tie the two elements together.
Rule 4: Symmetry is equal to beauty ❌
We’ve all admired the balanced beauty of a butterfly’s wings. But we’re not butterflies. We’re creative humans who love expressing ourselves and playing with jewels and gems. We love using asymmetry to add interest to our hoop earring charm stacks. It's a look that favours the bold but the statement it makes (this girl is brave enough to walk on the wild side) is so worth it.
Example: There are a few of our most loved charms stacked asymmetrically. We love how the pop of the Lepidolite in the Moonrise Charm on the right balances with the Lavender & White Jade on the left.
4 Actual Jewellery Rules We Live By
- Take your jewellery off before swimming, showering, or exercising
- Keep your jewellery clean by wearing it or following our jewellery cleaning guide
- Put your jewellery on after you’ve applied moisturiser and sprayed your perfume
- Store your metals separately, preferably in a cool and dark jewellery box for pieces you wear less often or on a breathtaking display stand for your go-to jewels
Your Jewellery Should Say Something About You
There will always be someone who loves the rules we’ve mentioned. There will be girls on TikTok making new rules to match new trends. That’s all fine — as long as everyone is styling their jewellery the way they like it. You don’t have to listen to us or to your favourite influencer. You don’t even have to listen to Coco Chanel!
When you wear and style jewellery in a way that’s meaningful to you, you’re creating a look that says something about who you are, the memories you treasure, and the people you hold dear.
