I created a signet ring for my son to celebrate his birth and the wild and wonderful life I hope to give him with my husband, Andrew. I often get asked to create custom signet rings for new mums who want to carry their little one’s birthstone with them so it felt natural to make one for myself.
A Pinky Promise from Mum to Son
Having a baby, especially your first one, is such a big moment in your life and marking the occasion with something special was important to me. My Mum has rings that my Dad gave her following my and my sibling's births. She still has them and they’ll be passed down to us one day which is so unbelievably special. I wanted to create an heirloom like this to be passed down to Archie when he is older.
A Little Piece of My Heart
I chose to make this signet in the shape of a heart for a couple of reasons. Firstly, who doesn’t love a cheesy heart symbol? But also, few things compare to the way your heart bursts with love for your babe – it is as if they are a piece of your heart living outside of your body. So I hold him in my heart and he is my heart.
Special Stones
The stones on my ring are small white diamonds and a regal amethyst – Archie’s birthstone. This stone selection was easy because it creates a tangible connection to the occasion that the ring celebrates. And you could say that Archie already knew his Mum well and timed his arrival accordingly – I love purple so I love that his birthstone is juicy and purple.
The Process Made Personal
We craft custom rings in our Cape Town studio every week and we make this process as special as it could be. But it felt different designing and creating a ring for myself. Our usual process looks something like this:
- The customer reaches out and my team and I will begin guiding them through the design process. We’ll send estimated quotes and source the perfect stones from various suppliers.
- Then, if the design necessitates it, we’ll create CAD drawings (very cool 3D imagery that helps you get an idea of how the finished piece might look).
- We’ll cast the piece and hand it over to the customer with love and best wishes that the jewel will become an important family heirloom to be passed down and worn through generations.
But because I was designing this ring myself, I drew it directly as a CAD and had it cast and set from there. I felt sure of what I wanted and I loved the combination of purple, gold, and the little white diamonds.
