Today we’re taking you behind the scenes of our custom engagement ring process.
The now-engaged couple approached us to create their dream ring that celebrates their love for the bush and their life by the sea.
First, we’ll share the meaning behind each stone the couple selected for the ring.
Then we’ll let you inside of the process we went through to bring the stones together in an intricate design.
Every Stone Has a Story
The stones selected for this engagement ring are symbolic and special for the couple. Here’s why we chose them.
It Started with a Sapphire
This custom engagement ring is anchored by a luscious oval blue sapphire symbolising loyalty, faithfulness and sincerity making it a powerful emblem of trust and devotion for the couple.
Ocean Meets Bush
The new fiances we created this ring for are Cape Town-based but have an unending love for the bush.
The blue colour of the stone is a nod to Cape Town’s beautiful sea and sky. We brought in the bush by including accent stones and protea detailed settings.
The More Stones the Merrier
We used a fancy yellow diamond and a brown cognac diamond to celebrate the colours found in the bush.
The addition of white diamonds breaks up the colours and adds a classical feel which brings the ring together.
A September Wish
Beyond all of the wonderful symbolism in this ring, sapphire is the September birthstone which happens to be the client’s birth month.
The Process
Stone Sorting
We had a good idea of the stones this couple wanted for their ring but we weren’t sure about their placement yet.
We used a gemstone tray to lay the stones out in different designs so we could be sure about where each one should go in the final design.
Sketching Up a Dream
Once we knew which stones we were working with and had gotten to know the client and their idea of the perfect ring, we started turning our ideas into detailed sketches – first on paper and then digitally as you can see below.
Moving the Design to CAD: Computer-Aided Design
This is where the ring started coming to life.
CAD drawings help us show exactly how each stone and element of the ring will work together.
The CAD drawings for this client give a closer look at the protea-inspired claws that hold the special stones in place.
Handing Over the Final Piece
Once the ring had been manufactured, it was finally time to give it to the client.
This part is always bittersweet because we have to say goodbye to the jewel we’ve spent weeks refining.
But, at the same time, we know that that ring has important work to do as a symbol of the couple’s enduring love.
